(And I'm embarrassed I can't remember who made that fine instrument.)

Same thing here. I've been "grooving" on Esbjorn Hazelius's Malåberg for sometime now! He's really quite good. Even though I understand only a couple of words.

Arnt, I was hoping you would weigh in, even being of Norwegian extraction. (No one is perfect, right? )
Billy, glad you remember Vittskövlevisan. That's the tune that got me, and of all the versions I've heard, I remain fondest of the one done on that Swedish tv show. Unfortunately I can't find it either...perhaps it's been pulled.

You should check out their newest album (I think?) with the simple title "Live".
And give a listen to the third cut, "Det lyser En Stjarna" (and the first "a" should have a couple of little dots above it, but I'm not clever enough to insert those....)

So--was it indeed Lars Rasmussen? I owe him pretty big.

Most Swedes are not clever enough either but they do it some how. It's a wonder!




I've already said I like that instrument! I've always thought stringed instruments should have at least 6 strings to sound decent but I really like that one. Great player too!

We call it a guitar bouzouki, because it is built pretty much like a standard steel string guitar, but with 4 pairs of strings that are tuned in 5ths, just like a 'zouk (and mandolins, fiddles, cellos and on and on). But, you can call it a crazy instrument if you want!

Florentin, my Swedish is as poor as yours--evidently.
But the purpose of these musicians, as I understand it, is to sing traditional Swedish (& other sources?) Christmas folk tunes. They have separate musical careers, and then come together to do these concerts.
We need Arnt or Lars to translate for us!

Here's another from Esbjorn.

It's called "The Last Waltz". It's about a man who has a last night with his girlfriend at a dance and after they part, she's dies in a bizarre helicopter crash!

..... well.... I don't speak Swedish ... well .... at all... that's my translation, such as it is!

Beautiful song though.

Thanks for the kind words! Esbjörn is a great musician and Im so thankful that he is playing a guitar of mine. These clips are from 'jul i folkton' (folk music christmas) and it is indeed a collection of some of swedens finest musicians in the genre, that gets together for a christmas tour every winter. They play traditional swedish folktunes, in their own personal way. Another guy to look up from this group is Roger Tallroth (normally palying with Väsen).

If you are interested in Esbjörns music you should really look up the album he made with Johan Hedin, who is playing 'nyckelharpa'.

Lars, I really like that kind of finish treatment on the soundboard. That fading..kind of burst. Could you give a brake down on how you do it? Tasteful!

I DL'd Vittskövlevisan from Amazon some time ago. They have many of Hazelius' songs available. It's the best I have, though like yourself, I still prefer the TV Video.
