I'm planning to tint a guitar with some amber shellac, and then do a wipe on poly for a bit more bulk. I'm worried about the solvents in the poly melting the tint coats and making a smeary mess. Any thoughts/advice?

Never tried it but shellac and poly, unless it is oil based poly and no-wax shellac, may not be a good mix. Better do a test first.

Wipe on poly will go over shellac with no problem. I do it a lot.

How about nitro over wipe on poly?
I am having a hell of a time getting the wipe on poly to stay glossy over some macassar ebony. It seems that every other grain line is satin and the rest are gloss. I am at over 30 coats of the poly so far. I assumed I would need to build some finish, but it has built with no shine to show for it. I just want to hit it with some rattle can Deft nitro and leave it be.
May do it anyway to test.

Tony, does the wipe-on poly feel like its curing? I don't know about macassar ebony, but I do know that wipe-on poly does not cure very well over EI rosewood.

Pat,
It takes much longer to stop feeling sticky, so I guess the answer is yes, but slowly. I have put it on EIR and it was fine, but this macassar is giving me problems. I think I may just sand it off ans spray some nitro on it. I like the feel of the poly on the neck and the mac. ebony is a back strap. The front of the head stock is getting nitro anyway, so I may as well just spin the neck around and shoot the back strap as well.

It'll work fine, as long as you make sure your shellac is dewaxed, otherwise the poly won't stick to the shellac.

Don't do this, the nitro won't stick to the poly. What you are experimenting is what Pat is suggesting; the oils in the ebony prevent the poly from curing. Scrape off the poly and seal with a couple of coats of shellac, that'll solve your problem.

Thanks Alain! I will do just that. Fortunately the wipe on poly takes a long time to build so it wont take lone to sand or scrape it off.
