Whats the best temperature for bending Cherry at appx 2.2mm

Are there any advantages of cooling/leaving the sides in the bender for 12 hours ?

John I have bent cherry for a small baritone uke using my silicone heating blanket. The cherry we have here is a little denser and heavier than h. Mahog. which bends readily at 25o deg F. My guess would be 275-300 deg F . I would not leave it for long , cherry IMHO tends to get scorch marks and burn readily when a lot of heat is applied via cutting tools ,think bandsaw, table saw, router bits etc. aggresive sanding , anything that generates high heat seems to leave burn marks , which are a PITA to get rid of.

John,

I'm currently building an OM style cherry guitar of the same thickness. I lightly spritzed the sides with distilled water and sandwiched each with craft paper. Placed that between two metal slats, then a heating blanket outside and finally a metal slat over that. Heated it to around 310 with starting the bending process at 290 at the waist. Bent the lower bout next and finally the upper one. Turned off the heat and let it cool to near room temp, then reheated to 300. Turned off the heat again and left in the bender overnight.

Only problem I encountered was with the tight waist areas--hinted at cracking on the inside. No scorching and minimal springback.

Many thanks, I have stainless slats so i was wondering if the paper/foil sandwich was necessary

I'll use 300 and see how I go

I don't know about cherry but SS slats will cause dark stains on many woods. (something to do with the ph of the wood I'd guess) I always use the alumiumn foil in the sandwich. No surprises that way

Stainless steel won't stain the wood , Spring Steel will . The free iron ions will from the heat and moisture in the bending process. Use a barrier when in doubt.
