A few months ago, I posted a few pictures of the fingerboard inlay for this tenor ukulele. It's finished now and I took these pictures before I strung it up. It's all koa except for the mahogany neck and ebony bridge, fingerboard (what little you can see), and head plate. The head stock inlay is white and black MOP, and the fingerboard uses white MOP, black MOP, paua abalone, a touch of gold MOP (the tiger's eyes), a bit of bone (the teeth), and at least six different types of reconstituted stone. I have been playing it as much as I can before I have to ship it off to its owner, and it has a sound that is rich and balanced. I will miss this one.

Mike, the tuners are Waverly. My inlay technique? I've learned a lot from Grit Laskin in classes he's taught at a woodworking school in Indiana. Especially in designing an inlay, which is the part I struggle with.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I finally figured out what was confusing me... the neck holder. That was why asked about the tuners. :oops:
