I'm going to be using a satin wiping varnish finish on my first guitar, and I was wondering if it is possible to put the bridge on first. With a satin finish, I'm guessing there will be less buffing so the bridge wouldn't really get in the way too badly as it would with a gloss finish. It just looks like it would save so much time, not having to scrape all the finish off in the bridge area.
What do you think?

You can locate the bridge area before finishing and use painter's tape to mask it off (1/16" inside the footprint of the bridge). After finishing, peel the tape off and you have a clean gluing surface.

That's a way I hadn't thought of, but then how do you peel the tape off when it is covered with about 10 coats of varnish? and could the residue from the tape interfere with the glue joint?

I mask before I finnish too. You should do a light scrapping with a razor blade before you glue to ensure you have a fresh glueing surface, but it isn't a pain at all. . .

The best masking I have found is Grafix high tack frisket film http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/9-x-12-matte-extra-tack-prepared-frisket-film-129791/ it is much thinner than masking tape, stays on after application and is easy to pull off. Just score the edges and pull off. I have not used it with varnish but is should work the same as with lacquer.

Don't bother.
It is much easier to wipe on a nice coat with no obstructions. Then, mark where your bridge goes, tape around it, and sand the finish off. 10 coats of wiping varnish comes off lickety split.
Two minutes or less...
