As an FYI . . .

Right now Woodcraft has EIR back and side sets on sale for $49.99 (plus tax and shipping) until midnight tonight. Since they aren't a traditional tonewood supplier, I was unsure what quality they were, but decided to order a couple of sets since they are, in my experience, good about returns. I received the sets today. One was, IMO, pretty nice . . . back and sides quartersawn, dark with reasonably tight grain, and good color match.

I'll be returning the other set. The backs were rift to flat sawn with wide grain, which I could deal with, but they also had a loose, spongy knot about 3/8" in dia. about 1.5" inches in from the middle. Also, one of the sides of that set was poorly sawn, making it too thin - < 5/64 at one point. I already contacted Woodcraft and they said the return of the set was no problem.

So, if you want a couple of sets you may want to consider ordering twice what you need and returning what you don't like.

All in all, the experience was what I expected. They aren't like forum sponsors who cater to luthiers (and whose products are great and service even better). But if you don't mind ordering more than you need and doing a return or two, one might find a bargain.

I was in the local shop during the week looking for something else and saw the couple sets they had. I wasn't impressed so let 'em keep 'em. They did have a gorgeous, deep reddish brown FB blank for $10 that I picked up.

My local woodcraft had 3 sets. One was rift/flawsawn and warped. One was fairly straight, a few small knots, but was extremely light colored and that inconsistently as well. The third was super dark, tight straight even grain that was quartersawn with no trace of warpage, for $50!

A few months back they let me mix and match a pretty nice set as well, but I paid the $79 price tag.

I'm not complaining, that's for sure!
