The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

ART not PORN!

Let's try to pull off the opposite of a thread jack. I have a bunch of mahogany offcuts from Hibdon that are essentially neck blanks but just a little short (or a lifetime supply of uke necks). I also have a bunch of mahogany blocks of various shapes from the same source. These are really nice and if I use a v jointed headstock I can do a stacked heel, or if I use a separate block for the heel, I can do a scarf comfortably. I don't really like the look of a heel made from a separate block unless it is well matched to the neck shaft. When you do a stacked heel you can ensure that all the pieces are of uniform color and the grain is running the same and that looks much nicer to my eye.

If I use a separate block, I can get a good enough color match as most of the wood in this lot is of uniform color but is there any trick for matching up the grain direction? in the rough, it is hard for me to tell what it will look like once carved and under finish. . .

Take your choice:-
Delete, X-out, annul, black out, bleep, blot out, blue-pencil, cancel, clean, clean up, cross out, cut, cut out, decontaminate, destroy, drop, edit, efface, eliminate, exclude, expunge, obliterate, omit, pass up, rub, rub out, rule out, sanitize, snip, squash, squelch, sterilize, strike out, trim, wipe out.
Perhaps we should have a vote?

The perfect delete would be to not even show up in this thread....but I can't figure out how to do it.
