I'm shopping around for some curly koa binding. Anyone have a good source preference? I know koa usually comes with a hefty price which is why I would like to shop around. Other than Lmi and SM, I haven't found any other sources.thanks in advance.

I've found it a lot more economical to buy a set of flamed koa sides and cut my own binding. You'll get enough binding to do several guitars and the cost per piece will generally be a few dollars less (per-piece) than buying the pre-cut binding. I've occasionally been disappointed in the quality of curly koa binding I've received (figure and colour do not always match between all the pieces). If you cut your own from a set of sides you are guaranteed that all the pieces will match.

I've bought Koa sides from Volcano Guitar Works in the past. According to their website they are still retailing wood, but apparently are no longer selling over the internet.

Bruce Creps at Notable Woods has some I'm sure. The hard thing right now is finding the really good stuff, the consistent tight curl and good color.

I have bought small boards, 1x2, 1x3 etc from either Bruce at Notable, or Volcano, and cut bidning strips from that .. doesnt get much cheaper and as others haven noted, it all matches.

Bob Gleason at Pegasus has consistently sold me the most stunning high flame koa binding. I'll buy from no other source.

Thanks to all. Pegasus has great prices. I contacted them with an order. A lot of nice looking wood on that site.

Figured Australian blackwood is a good alternative. Both are acacias. Most people struggle to tell the difference.
