I got a large stash of old assorted veneer (imagine a lifetime supply pile of IRW, genuine satinwood, avodire, tulipwood!, birdseye maple, madrone burl!) but one of them I can't ID. It is light brown and tan narrow stripes, medium-high density, large pores. When sanded it has the most foul stink I encountered in wood, really similar to that of the shield bug. Puaah. Could it be teak? I can't come closer based on looks.

Maybe not enough contrast for Zebrano, but that does smell a bit like dog poo. (At least mine does)

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

edit: never touched ovangkol, but the from the pics i´ve seen it looks close. reportedly it stinks! there´s also a brown wood named stinkwood (Ocotea bullata), but IIRC it looses the smell once dry. good luck with the ID.

could be black walnut? I love how it smells but I receive complaints from others in the house when I work with it!

That looks like bocote, but the large pores and stink say zebrawood or shedua.

it would help to see it scraped or sanded smooth; looking like that it could even be walnut or indian rosewood IMHO

Looking some more in the pile I found some sheets that are much more likely to be zebrawood (in the right part of the photo). There is zero smell when scraped so not sure how it got the bad rep, if it is truly zebra.

On the left, high grade dark tight Indian rosewood. I know Indian can be very coarse and light in color, but the mystery wood (center) has nothing in common with any rosewood.

Scraped it really looks the same, except the roughness. And boy it stinks horribly. I can't believe a walnut could be so repulsive.

Yes it is a similar type of brown, but definitely not sapele. The texture is quite different at close inspection.

Looks to me like Afromosia. It is sometimes used as a substitute for Teak. Also used a lot on Electric guitars. Nice wood. On the CITES II List.

One more thing. Afromosia smells like your house is on fire. Burning plastic or insulation or something, Not a very pleasant odor in my opinion,
