Is anyone using the king arthur tools galahad cg to rough shape archtop instrument plates? If so could you offer an opinion on how well it works or anything to watch out for when in use?

I'm using a flap/ disc sander on a die grinder and am ready to try a Lancelot too. I'm all ears on this thread.

I don/t use it for archtops .But I went to lowes and bought a angle grinder PC , hitachi, dewalt etc . I got the KAT lancelot cutter from HF if you google their name on youtube they present a nice video on it/s many uses I use it for carving welsh stick chair seats and luv it.But it makes a mess one needs DC, noisy, but it saves a lot of time .I use the different shaped donut kutzall carbide cutters woodcraft with angle grinders to furthur refine my shapes on the seat. I would get the 2in mini carver for archtops. Mine is 4.5in and I/ve used it to chainsaw small trees.

I was one of the team that invented that! It works great but it can be a handful so be cool on soft woods!

I recently tried a flap disc sander from home depot on my 4 1/2" angle grinder for shaping some spruce and maple and it burned the wood very easily. Maybe it's just my technique.

I'd seen videos on the KAT stuff online which is what got me interested. That and the articles on Tom Ribbecke. But haven't found many reviews on the galahad. The lancelot is on my list for sure.

I like the looks of the little Merlin set up too but can't shell out the cash right now. But I put both the Merlin and the Guinevere on my Christmas wish list.

And just for the record I'm not affiliated wit KA Tools.

The Lancelot was the first of the line. I never liked the Galahad because it was originally designed the be chucked into a drill and I thought was to low RPM.

Ok, yeah it seems like a drill would just be inefficient for all sorts of reasons.

I have the Lancelot that I bought when I built a carved top and back double bass. Be very careful and practice with it before you attack your prized tonewood. It is good for hogging off lots of wood in a very short time. One slip and your tonewood becomes kindling.

Sounds like good advice. I've have a couple doug fir boards 2" x 12" x 2', left over from some garden planters, that should work for practice.

But then he might have to defend his cave from saber toothed tigers and wooly mammoths while using those tools!

I used the Lancelot for a mando top - it worked well- but as mentioned - one slip and you lose a body part or a nice top -

I used the drill press to drill the depth holes and then used the Lancelot to hog out the in between. It was fast and nice, but not my style. I will try a gouge and spoon planes on the next one. I used the Safe-T-Plane on the convex side
