I nabbed this set of Honduran Rosewood from Hibdon recently and he has a few other nice sets too if anyone is looking. To my eyes that is one of the nicest sets I have been able to find recently!

I know it like spitting into the wind, but there is no such thing as "Honduran rosewood". It is called Honduras rosewood. Just like "Canada goose", a bird which may or may not come from Canada. Honduras rosewood comes from other countries besides Honduras.

Good explanation Filippo. I like Honduran(s) rosewood a lot. I have a pile of fretboards I made out of a piece I found last year. They always play, sound and look great. I was told that this particular kind of rosewood is the most similar in density to Brazilian though the color isn't anywhere close. I just built a chambered "solid body" out of it and let me tell you, it is freaking heavy. The thing weighs as much as a Les Paul even with all that wood hogged out. It also looks quite striking though a clear finish.

I agree that it was somewhat expensive but nothing else I have found was anywhere near this well quartered. So I opted to pay more for the quality.

Actually, the Dutch transplanted Dalbergia Nigra to Indonesia a couple of hundred years ago. That could be complete BS, I don't remember where I read it, but I don't think the source had anything to do with musical instruments. Maybe National Geographic?

I know for a fact that there is some decent honduran mahogany, the real stuff, sweetenia, coming from over there somewhere - one of the local hardwood shops had some big planks about a year or so ago, it looked pretty decent.

Honduras RW (D. stevensonii) is denser than BR on average. Indian RW and some samples of Madagascar RW are closer to the same density range as BR.
That is the most expensive set I have seen.

That's probably the nicest set I've seen, looks wise. Quartered, of course. Also the most expensive.

I'm with you, you gotta pay the man if you want the good stuff. I think of this ind of wool like a bond. It can only go up in value as it becomes more scarce, especially that level of quality.

I called Old Standard Wood and he said he wouldn't have any sets for at least 3 months and the ones he would have probably wouldn't be completely quartersawn. He told me even if the grain runs closer to riftsawn they still sell it as quartersawn because of the rarity of truly quartersawn Honduras Rosewood. This is in no way intended as a slight to Old Standard it is just a commentary on how hard it is to find right now. So even though I did pay a little more I think I got my moneys worth. This piece is dead on quartersawn and nicely figured. Coincidentally, if you turn the back over you cannot see the knots, so I will probably build with the other side out.

I built a few guitars with Honduran(s) mahogany. I actually found a piece that was quarter sawn and built a carve top with it. It's lighter and sounds great. Also works super easy. You can find it. Just gotta look around.

Actually this thread is in reference to Honduras Rosewood NOT Mahogany. Thanks for the input though!

I thought we were devolving the thread to talk about anything from Honduras. I dated a Honduran girl once. She could sing when plucked correctly.

If anyone is interested in Honduran Rosewood you might want to check out A. Hix Tonewood. He has some great looking stuff up on ebay right now. I'd be in the market if my tonewood budget wasn't in such disarray.
