I just finished a post on Hesh's open house thread and realized the post was number 999! I decided to post one more to get to an even 1,000! I don't read or post as much to the forum as I used to, but kudos to Lance and all the members as this forum has been a great resource throughout the six or so years I have been a member. I've built a few guitars and last week shipped number 20 to a customer in Colorado. Hard to believe!

Wonderful looking guitar. I love the rosette. What is the inside wood on the thin rosette purfling? I have always like the aesthetics that your guitars have and steal as many ideas as I can.

Nice one Kenneth, classy!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Thanks everyone! Customer is extremely happy with it :D I was originally just going to make a short post to tick over 1,000, but as I had just finished a couple of guitars, I decided to post a few pics of one. Guess I should have shared some details:

25.4" scale OM
Madagascar rosewood back and sides, rosette, and headstock face plate laminate
Osage orange purflings
Wenge bindings, quartersawn
Palisander backstrap and neck laminates
Red spruce soundboard
Waverly tuning machines (with screws intentionally not aligned ;)

Ken

Beautiful & inspiring work Ken!

Those darker neck laminates are very cool but scare the hell out of me. Any asymmetry (one of my trademarks) would stick out like a sore thumb.

Thanks for sharing.

I also really like the neck laminates especially where they come into the heel block. I think I'll give it a go. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful guitar.

Thanks again everyone! I appreciate all the wonderful compliments!

Kevin and Joe, yes, that dual lam is tricky as the lams have to be perfectly spaced along the sides of the heel. Not impossible, it just requires some care in designing and shaping. I do cheat, though, as I have my CNC machine mill the neck. But even then, I must have my stock glued up properly and set up dead center on the machine. I also have to ensure I get the mortise and tenon cut so the center of my heel aligns with the center of the back. I typically cut the tenon first, then with that done, I can lay out the mortise and cut it (I cut the mortise slot after the body is all done). Without those lams, the heel can be cheated a bit by reshaping, but with those lams fanning out, I can't shave more off one side or I expose more of the lam along that side. It's a very cool effect that I like a lot better than a single lam running up the center.

Ken
