I took a hiatus from making ukuleles this winter to make this Weissenborn. It is all mahaogany (from Hibdon) with maple sound hole ring and bindings. The inlays are all paua abalone. I used the StewMac plans for basic shape and bracing pattern, but combed all of the threads here, on the Australian forum, and the resonator forums for details. This was harder than I thought it would be, with the difficulties all having to do with the joint of the head stock and block to the body/neck. Mitering all of the binding and purfling in that area was particularly challenging and fun--lots of angles. I am not very good at playing with a slide, but I am enjoying this instrument. Sure would like to hear it played by someone who can really play.

That's a gorgeous weissenborn...could you elaborate a little on the difficulties of the headstock/neck joint and how you dealt with them? I'd like to try and build one of these down the road and I've been collecting as much info as I can, but so far I haven't had much luck finding discussions on this aspect of the build. Any insights you could share would be appreciated!

Zac, issue no. 1 was the basic design of the head stock/block. Todd Stock gave a useful tutorial, but I think it has been taken down. It was a good starting point for me. Other forum posts made me concerned about stability, so lengthened the block and added side struts like one of the other posters described on the ANZ forum.

Another issue was a choice I made that I wanted the sides and back completely boxed in with binding and purfling. This was harder than I thought it would be because of the geometry of the block/head stock transition, including the curved ramp up from the flat back of the head to the back of the neck, where the sides will end and transition to the head stock, and the mitering of the binding. For an experienced woodworker, this probably would not be so challenging, but it was for me.
