I though some of you might like to take a look at this video I did. It's a sort of stop-motion animation of the process of carving the top of an archtop guitar. For best results, try to ignore the missing frames, poor lighting, and bits of me in the shot:

http://www.sankeyguitars.com/blog/2014/7/17/carving-an-archtop-guitar-video.html

This is actually pretty much how I do my arch tops, although this one took three times as long because I had to stop and press the remote shutter release every time I took a swipe. By the end I got a little sloppy and you can see how the video seems to speed up. Still, enjoy!

Fred: total time for the carve was probably 12-15 hours, plus a couple more for building and editing the movie. The top still needed some recurve touchup and finish sanding after the rest of the guitar was assembled, not to mention the tone bars, but of course I didn't show that. Normally I'd carve a top to that stage of done-ness in two half-days (can't carve all day 'cause my hands get too sore).

Dan: that's euro spruce from stew-mac. I'd never tried it before. Stiff stuff (stiffer and denser than
I like actually), and more runout than ideal. It looks nice though, and that's what the customer wanted. I think it worked out well, though it might take a while to break-in.

Mike, you make it look easy.
Wow! you have some really cool designs on you website.
I build electrics, and yours are killer!
I really like the finishes. Do you typically use an oil finish?

Thanks everyone.
Dan: I usually use Livos. It's an oil/resin blend. Some guitars get french polished instead though.

The video was very fun to watch. I really enjoyed hearing the voice of the instrument, too. You make some nice guitars, Mike.
