When I first started hanging out at OLF I think there was always a lot of interest in what people were up to and everyone liked a few photos. I still do and a few others do but not as much as there use to be. There is such a wealth of talent here and all kinds of ideas one can pirate. Anyway, in keeping with the old OLF tradition of picture posting I thought I'd put up a couple of my latest.

I've done 2 with bevels just because I want't to try to get the technique down. The first one is Koa/bearclaw Sitka from Maurice contracting in the Haida Gwaii. I managed to get 3 sets from a billet I got from them. This ones for one of my oldest friends and the guy that showed me my first guitar chord way too many years ago. He came to stay for a couple of days while I was just getting going on this guitar that his sweetie asked me to make for him as a birthday surprise. Without knowing it was his guitar he got to pick out the top, do some design appointments and bend the sides! His birthday's in a couple weeks. Should be a fun time for all. I'm playing with neck finishes and this one has my time tested(on other woodwork)Boiled linseed, polyurethane, thinner and Japan dryer. I like the look and feel of it. It doesn't have a huge buildup and I will be interested to see it in a couple of years.

The next one is Sitka and lumber yard Wenge. I've had this Wenge for a while and I wanted to see it under finish. It's plain but has a beautiful 2 tone chocolatey brown colour. It is by far the most porous wood I've used and it is quite heavy. I should have thinned the back a little more to lighten it up. I wanted to try a Maple bevel just cause it's less forgiving than darker colour and it want well. I also wanted to do a contrasting neck with some local Maple I had kicking around. Both these are what I call my Concert Models and use a forward shifted X with a 16" lower bout.

Thanks for looking and comments and criticism are always welcome. :D

Cheers,
Danny

Danny, those are nice [:Y:] I too am one of those who likes it when people post photos - lots of ideas and I just like looking at guitars. What' the finish on the box?

Hey Danny, Those are a couple of beauties! [:Y:] I can't say I am a fan of the arm bevel but you executed it quite nicely (my preference does not equal criticism I hope you understand).

I do love the looks of both of them and that bearclaw is stunning.

Very clean work Danny,

Cheers,
Bob

You've got some serious chops there, Danny! Love both of those guitars! I've got four sets of curly sitka from Maurice. I can probably make them look like banana boxes, though.

Alex

That is a very elegant mix of the Laskin and Ryan style armrest. Well done.

Very nice! I love wenge guitars; it is such an underrated tonewood IMO. It's a pain to work and finish but very affordable and the results are always outstanding. I also like the softer finish on the necks.

Impeccable, Danny! I love the way you echoed the beautiful flame in the rosette with that of the arm bevel. Your neck finish recipe sounds like what I put on my workbench. I found the recipe in the Woodworker's Journal. Never thought of using it on the neck, but it's very durable but not as "plasticky" feeling as lacquer can be. Beautiful instruments!

Thanks Steve - The box and headplate finish is Mohawk nitro. It's my usual finish. The Maple neck is Waterlox. Pretty different stuff. For a wipe on finish it gets a build up with very few coats. I like it and it's new vanilla scent. :?

Thanks Aaron - I can't wait to use some of the sets I got from you. Bocote with black accents. Mmmmmm I think that might be for me. [:Y:]

Thanks Bob - I certainly wouldn't take offence to someone not liking a bevel. Just curious though, how come? And how old are you and have you ever tried one? Old guys seem to like them the most. That would be me. They are pretty comfortable to play. Especially on a bigger guitar.

Thanks Chris!

Hey Alex! And how many sets of wood have you got squirrelled away? laughing6-hehe I've seen your work. I know when you finally get the time your first will be outstanding bud. And thanks.

Thanks Chris - I appreciate that. Your designs are always an inspiration and one day I'm going to get off my butt and work on some not so traditional shapes. I'm still playing around with bevel design. I'm not sure where I'll end up.

Thanks Steve - It's hard to come up with a bridge design that's a little unique. Not sure if this is but I think I'll stick with it for a while anyway.

Thanks Glen!

Coming from the master of bevels I appreciate that James. I don't know if it's because of the Wenge but it is much brighter than the Koa. And yes, it is a pain to finish. I used Zpoxy and the next one will have at least 5 sessions rather than 3.

Thank you Wendy.

Thanks Beth! It is nice to live in land of Maple. That is a great all around finish. I love it for smaller furniture pieces. I'm liking it a lot on Mahogany necks too.

Thank you Jeff, J-A and Corky. I do appreciate it.

I'll try to find the time to do sound clips of the 2 just because of the difference.

Happy BC day to anyone who happens to live in this beautiful province. Do you y'all have an Aug 1st holiday in the US? I think ours is fairly new. Always trying to get another beer drinking day on the calendar us Canucks. :D

Very nice guitars. Especially enjoyed the story of the birthday present. That's what it's all about.

Lonnie! Are you saying it's not about the girls and money!!! Ha Ha. You're sure right about that one buddy. It's great to spread the love. I'm just about out of guitar playing friends and family to practice on though.

Thanks Steve. I'd like to see more of everyone's photo's.

Thank you Haans. I appreciate all your advice in the past and future.

Thanks Martin. The guys I got it from rarely put wood on at auction on Ebay. This billet did and I actually got it for a reasonable price. I do like Bearclaw.

Thanks Wayne. I probably shouldn't be posting on the WWW until he actually has it in his hands. Ha Ha

Thank You Waddy. I really appreciate that.
