Hope this doesn't violate any OLF rules, and feel free to pull this topic if it does, but I just ordered a set of 4 for 86 bucks! At that price, I had to give them a shot. Comes with the leather tool roll too! That's at Amazon. Not going to link it in case I'm breaking rules but you all know how to use google. Anyone have any opinions or experience with these?

Typically the newer steel just doesn't compare to the old stuff as in pre 1940. Try to find yourself some old Everlast Stanley chisels or the original 750s.

Doesn't break any rules but if you buy them through the Amazon banner at the top of the page it helps OLF.

My wife bought me this Sweetheart set a couple of years ago. As a hobbyist builder who uses chisels rather infrequently, I find that these work just fine. Are there better tools in the world? Yes. Does bracewood care? Not that I've noticed.

Thanks for the heads up! I needed some chisels (just had 2 junky ones) and bought these through the OLF/Amazon link so the site gets a boost from it.

I don't know if they are from the same forge in Sheffield, UK, as my Sheffield gouges, but if they are, they are a steal for $80.

I realize these chisels aren't made from the same steel as the pre war stuff. I have lots of chisels...LOTS of chisels. I have a set of Bergs that span 1/8" increments up to 1 1/2" Lots of old Bucks and Witherby's and a few good old Marples and such. I don't however own a single Stanley. I don't know why that is aside from not liking to buy into collector's pricing. I also knew that if I bought one from Ebay, I'd soon be trying to put a full set together. I mostly bought the new Sweethearts to see if I like the style. The 750s always seemed to be a graceful design, and about 2 years ago, I would have thought paying 75 dollars for a Lie Nielsen Chisel was ridiculous, but I thought these would give me a bit of a feel as to whether someday I go for broke on them. To be honest though, I'd probably buy a set of Barr Bench chisels before the Nielsens. I've many times considered selling most of my chisels so I can invest in a set. I had a chance to use them last summer and I'm convinced there isn't a better chisel out there, old or new. I'll try and do a little bit of a write up when I get the Sweethearts. Since this is only the 4 chisel set, I considered trying to get the filler sizes in the old 750's from ebay, just to have something to compare it with. Eventually I need to stop buying chisels and start building more guitars, so keep an eye out on the classifieds for some nice old chisels ;).

Seriously, virtually any chisel will perform perfectly adequately for Guitar making. It's virtually always paring work done on relatively soft timber. Even my set of 4 that cost me less than $20 are adequate.

According to this article:

"The 750s are manufactured in Sheffield, England, from high-carbon, chrome steel (the originals were made in the United States). They are precisely machined with clean and consistent beveled edges, 30° factory-ground bevels, and reasonably flat backs.
