I wasn't happy with my back binding, especially as the top binding looks great so decided to re do it.tried just routing it off but it melts with the heat. Any tips? I used car glue and want to re bind using the same. heat? Hair drier? Acetone?

Mike, what kind of binding is it? I've routed celluloid binding off perfectly with a laminate router in a binding jig. Comes off in chips. You do have to rout backwards and I usually score the side edge as it's possible to chip the wood as the binding glue holds the wood well. Best to do it in several passes. An alternative is to score the same edge and just pull it off unless you used CYA.

A heat gun and a pallet knife will do the trick. That is how I pull bindings on restoration work when I want to reuse the bindings.

hmm.yes ca glue not car glue and just white abs plastic.new build not a restoration.

Thought so. ABS melts like a candle. I won't touch the junk. Combine that with CYA glue and you have a mess. My only thought is to slowly rout off what you can and clean the bit often till you get right down to the bottom. If you cut next to the wood with a trammel blade you might be able to just rip it off.
One of the reasons I don't like CYA for much of anything on a guitar or mandolin.

If CA, then maybe you'll luck out with acetone? Dunno for sure...

I would probably just separate it with a scalpel.

I went at it with a razor blade and a hair drier. Was a bit wary of heating the titebond wood joints so was fairly cautious on the heat. Came off fairly eaeasy, few small splinters but i put in slightly thicker and deeper binding so lost the damage. Thanks for the suggestions.
