Newbie question. I had to pull 4 frets out of my neck and the replacement wire I have doesn't want to fasten in the middle. I am using caul in a drill press to press the wire in. Wondering if crazy glue in the slots will hold the wire long term? I know about the tang crimper i just don't have one. Thanks for any help in advance

Dave: I use CA glue on all the frets I install. I only build and don't do repair work. I hold the fret tight with a caul and run CA the length of the fret. Acetone and a single edge safety razor blade work for glue cleanup.

Hi Dave, I believe the general consensus is that frets should be glued in. As far as crimpers go, Somogyi has a block of wood with a slot filed in it. He puts the fret in there, tang side up, and whacks it with the spine of a cleaver.

If it's good enough for Ervin... :-)

Yes we do use a tiny bit of CA on the ends of the fret wire. However since you mention its popping up in the center it may help if you re-shape the radius a little before installing to reduce spring back. I know makers also use PVA and even epoxy if the slots are a little too wide.
