Just stung one up today. I like the look of this one and these little fellows always have a big presents. This one has a little brighter tone than some of the others I have done. Could be the Maple or could be the very light BRW bridge. I'd be happy to hear opinions of what would give these little ones a warmer woodier tone. The last 2 I did were Kamagong (Philippine Ebony) and EIR. Seems to me they had a little more pleasantly worm tone.

I find rosewood for fingerboard and bridge warms things up, as does bone nut and saddle...

Fraser Valley Fine Woods which I think is now part of Bow River. As was the back and sides. If you keep your eyes open you can pick up parlour size wood for dirt...... almost.

It's hard to get the right angle to show it. This top has about as nice medullar rays as you'll ever see. I'll try some more photos soon.

Bone nut and saddle as usual. Bone pins to try to get a little more weight on the bridge. I have some BRW bridge blanks that are very light. This bridge was 19 G. Ebony FB though. Had to use ebony with all that inlay.

I would think the maple back and neck would contribute to the brighter sound, especially on a parlor. Looks like a deep box. What's the lower bout width?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Nice lookin' axe. First thing I noticed was that top too. What finish did you use?

Beautiful! I love quilted Maple, great craftsmanship. I have warmed up the tone on a few guitars by lowering the fundamental of the top by shaving the X braces through the sound hole. This may not be easy to do on a Parlour due to the smaller body size. Lowering by 10 Hz makes a notable difference.

Aesthetically, I think it requires a great amount of restraint and subtlety to get the most out of wood that is this heavily figured. You've done a superb job with this instrument! To my eye, nothing clashes with anything else. It all just fits and belongs together. So many times, we see instruments with lots of flashy component parts that are just a jumble of bling. Not here. I think your parlor guitar is wonderful!

Thanks JF. Nitro over a coat of amber shellac on the to top and orange shellac on all the Maple. I like the way it pops the grain but doesn't actually make it look orange. It's the first time I've tried spraying shellac. Dialled my gun right back and it worked well.

Gosh Patrick The neck was a randome chance. I wanted to have some kind of Figured Maple neck but didn't quite have the wood I wanted so it was a matter of what I had lying around the shop. I saw a Lowden where the neck laminations ran into the outer heel. Good enough for him............

A little pin knot showed up smack dab in the centre of the heel. Celebrate the knot.

Hey, Danny, that sort of laminated neck (with lams running down into the heel) is actually my preferred way to make a steel string neck. I can't really say why. I just think they look better than a stacked heel. I've done them both ways. ...as for the knot: Who cares? It's a feature of the guitar!
