I was gifted some BRW from a retired luthier (he is 88), enough for 3 guitars. Here are the first 2,
both with Engelmann Spruce tops

Bracing: radial spruce with carbon fibre

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Lovely work! I like the elegant and creative way you incorporated the decorative purfling into the end graft and backstrip on the first guitar and the sides of the second. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Mike,

They sound good. I'll try to get some recordings done (I'm not really a classical player but one of my guitar building students is). The first one is braced with Simon Marty style bracing using Spruce and Carbon Fibre in a radial style. It is clear, has good volume and is pretty even over the whole instrument. The second one is traditional Torrres style fan bracing with the secondary transverse brace having "fly overs" (only way I know how to describe them). It has a different sound and to be honest I prefer it. I think it is a clear tone across the whole range and I am building the third BRW guitar with the same bracing. I am fairly new to building classicals and so it is like going on first dates with a new girl each time one of them is finished. Wait, did that sound weird? Anyway, one of my students is about to build a 10 string classical in the Ramirez/Yepes tradition. That will be challenging!

Thanks for noticing the purfling George. The old gent that gave me the BRW also gave me a box of hand made purfling strips that he made when he was 16 during WWII in England. They couldn't get anything from Germany (for obvious reasons) which was where they had been getting purfling strips from in the past so he decided to make all his own. They are so fragile now but I am blessed to be able to give them a life at last.

He made them when he was 16!!! It would seem to be pretty serendipitous, you 2 coming together. Very cool.
