Doing an OM in padauk and lutz. Sanding is all done, but I'm afraid I may have lost one of my planes in the padauk pores. They make wenge look like maple.

No other content. Just complaining :-)

I'm close to finishing one myself, and expect my nose will look like I've been snorting paprika when I'm done sanding. Small price to pay for one of the best values in tonewood.

I looked like I had spent a week in a tanning booth after thinning padauk B&S with a Wagner-ish power planer. Does seem to bend like butter, though.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I use one of my test mules with a Padauk back for French polish teaching/practice. You can fill the pores beautifully one day and they'll be back in full force the next...

It's a beautiful wood. Built a telecaster style guitar out of it. Didn't worry about the pores since I just gave it a home made wiped on varnish oil finish. It does smell good but I had a reaction to the dust both skin irritation and respiratory. So wear a mask at least.

That's interesting, Shaw. I have lots of wood sensitivities and haven't had a reaction to Padauk. I'll be vigilant with it from now on.
