Any one got any "tricks" to keep tuner holes clear of finish (or minimise it) when spraying?
Or do you generally just deal with it after?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I've only sprayed a couple of necks so far, but what I did was take a shop towel style paper towel and poke it through and pull until the the hole was tightly filled. Then I took a razor and flush cut it on both sides. They popped out pretty easy after spraying.

I've also seen people talk about using the disposable ear plugs but I haven't tried that yet.

A sharp reamer does a nice job of cleaning up

I always favoured expandable foam ear plugs .... readily avail at drugstores & perfect for the job

Isn't that why reamers were invented?

I drill the holes after finish. Buffs out easier too.

I always did that as well. My last two guitars I tried drilling them first. I'm going back to my old method because they buff out better for me that way. I should add, I attach my necks after finishing is done.

I clean 'em up after spraying, wet sanding, and polishing.
I use sandpaper wrapped around a dowel. Not a pleasant task.

I'm another who switched to drilling the holes after finishing.
