Hey guys - I just finished this little guitar. Besides showing it off, I want to say thanks for OLF and all the info you guys share. She’s a little rough around the edges, but this guitar and my work has benefited greatly from OLF!

Specs
- O-28 vs (plans for Georgia Luthier Supply)
- 12 fret slotted headstock
- 1 7/8'' at nut

Materials
- 3 piece mahogany back, quilted mahogany sides
- sitka spruce top and bracing
- mahogany neck
- macassar ebony fingerboard and bridge
- herringbone purfling and rosette
- curly maple binding laminated with black fiber
- restoration tuners from StewMac

I don't have any recordings yet, but hope to in the next week or so. I went very light with this build, so she's very responsive. She purrs with a light touch and give out a little growl if you lay into her - more so than I expected considering her size.

I hand her off today to her owner -- a friend and co-worker. I'm having a bit of separation anxiety. I guess I've really become attached to this guitar. Good thing I'll be able to borrow it from time to time.

In case you’re wondering Kretzer is a family name and a nod to craftsmanship. Walter Kretzer was my great grand father several generations back. He outfitted and finished sailing yachts. Kretzer Boat Works was in operation on City Island, Bronx from 1906 to 1977.

Looks great. I like what you did with the veneer on the back of the headstock. In the second pic it looks like I see dual reinforcement strips, I guess because it was a 3 piece back?

Edit: Now I read 3 piece back in your description. :) duh

I don't see any rough edges on that beauty, Michael!

Thanks for the feedback guys! These projects demand so much, so reaching the end is a big deal. At least it is for me.

Next up will be something quite different from this one...a large body modern guitar. I should have it strung up in about 3-4 weeks.

Looks great. My daughter and her family live in Vancouver. Love to drop by the next time we're up that way.

What a beautiful guitar. I sure don't see any flaws. I especially like the 3 pc back and the blackstrap on the headstock. As a new builder I'm curious as to how the curved bottom end of the blackstrap is accomplished. Any photos of the steps you use?

Brad, this was my first time doing that volute. I don't have any photos. If you search in this forum I think you'll find some posts describing how it's done.

Basically I cut the headstock thick. Then used my drum sander and spindle sander to make the curve. I then used a rasp to shape it round. You can do this on a piece of scrap to get a feel for it.

The most difficult part was bending the blackstrap because that mahogany didn't want to bend but wanted to scorch.

Next time I do one I'll take photos and post a tutorial.

Stunningly beautiful work! I am trying to generate the courage to use some LMI herringbone purfling for the first time. How did you accomplish such a perfect installation?
