I have a Kohno 30 that is supposed to have a "cashew" finish. Years ago I had some ointment on my arm and the Vaseline was a partial solvent for the finish and I lost some finish where the arm rests on the edge. About 10 years ago, I had the guitar in for some work at a top notch repairman/restorer. He did what looked like a beautiful job repairing the finish with French polish shellac. Almost immediately, the texture of my shirt impressed into the new area. After a while that tended to rub out, but eventually the finish also rubbed off mostly everywhere, exposing sanding marks that the repairman did to prep for the French polish.

So, some time I may want to try to repair this. I have to assume that French polish out to stay on the guitar. Any advice?

I would use Royal-lac. Looks like shellac but much tougher. Can be applied over shellac finish.

Most of the finish is still the "cashew". Can Royal Lac go over that?

What is in Royal Lac?

Talk to Vijay at Shellacfinishes.com. He can, most likely, answer your questions about it. I know it will go over regular shellac, but I know nothing about a cashew finish.

Check out WilPro from Behlen/Mohawk.
Sounds like what you need for just this repair
