Is that what they would have been made of in '71? How should I put the radius in the bottom of the nut? Stick some sandpaper on the fretboard and sand it after roughing?

Looks like the one that came out of it was some type of synthetic. It had a stamp on the bottom. Would the easiest way to go is just ordering one on eBay for a few bucks? 7.25" radius.

Make one out of bone and upgrade the instrument.

We use the side of an old acoustic guitar with self-stick sand paper on the side on the lower bout. This provides a number of various radius shapes to sand the radius into the bottom of the nut.

Since Fender nuts are saddle like in width and have no shape that is not dictated by function above the fret board they are one of the easiest and quickest nuts to make out of bone and from scratch. I'll argue that with fitting the ends, getting a really snug fit in the slot, cleaning the slot and cutting the nut slots to proper depth it's just as quick as trying to adapt an aftermarket nut for some.
