How thick should a slotted headstock for a steelstring be?

Thicker that a non-slotted?

depends on the tuners you use, plus what kind of treatment you want to do on the edges, ie. how much of a chamfer .... most slot head tuners need at least .750 ... I use .800 ...

Depends on the tuner plate.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.
