The Wood Database has "wood filters" that can allow you to narrow down the possible choices. It allows you to select for wood type, geographic location, appearance, average weight, hardness, elastic modulus, end grain identification, and some other characteristics of the wood and the trees it comes from. It may give you a far better guide to identify your wood than the forum can.
