I planned on fitting a dovetail neck yesterday but, I couldn't find either chalk or paper. In addition, my back was screaming for some reason so I gave up for the day.

Before I order, I'd like to know your preferences. I have no plan of going into the shop today so I'll wait for your responses.

Just plan old blue chalk from the tool section of a hardware store, comes in chunks.

Chalk is good.
Carbon paper smears if it gets wet. Bought a nice piece of maple from a guy who left his carbon paper laying around, and it got wet. I had to cut the blue parts out....

On top of that, what kind of sandpaper do you use for sliding and adjusting the angle. I used 100 grit belt sander paper cloth. It took forever to remove any wood and I only had an 8th or less at the edge of that makes sense.

I do my flossing with fresh 320. It has lots of grit so it cuts uniformly, evenly and smoothly. I cut half a sheet in 1" strips x 8" long.

It is thin so conforms to the body which is what you want.

Cloth sanding belts IMO are too stiff and too thick and 100 grit is way overkill. That should have removed your 1/8" of wood in short order, probably too fast for the job at hand where accuracy is more important than speed. Was your sanding belt material used?

Fitting a neck joint is a finesse job not a muscle job.

To answer the original question, chalk, white blackboard chalk.

I had the cheeks fitting perfect right up til I glued and clamped. Then this.and after staring at this, i realized where I went wrong installing the fretboard and nut. This is why there's such a big space between the pick guard and bridge. Also why my drill but didn't hit the pocket when I reset the neck.
