An FYI about these blue boards.
It started with the ancient sitka. The blue boards from the 3000 yr old buried sitka log, that became very sought after and expensive.. $5000for a dreadnought top at the end.
These are only a few decades old, but nobody’s building log floats anymore. We have 1000’s of bdft of float log that we’ve salvaged. Very high defect log, from toredo mollusk damage, rot, breakage and other. But enough good wood that makes it profitable to put the labor in for recovery, and dealing with all the waste.
To put into perspective the rarity of “blue boards”, they only come from a small spot in a log, close to the iron, if theres not a knot, or breakage , or rot or or or. And out of 25,000 tops produced, our average yearly production, from just float log, we may get 100 blue guitar tops that are usable.

So these are soundboards with a story and the staining Color as evidence to support the story.

The picture above is the bucked and decked up logs from a float that the 340 Caterpillar log shovel is pulling out of the water in the pic of the 1 min. ad/commercial.
The floats are built with 80-110 foot logs. Most were 80 ft. but the last one we brought in was 110' long x 70x wide. It's the one pictured in the thumbnail of the blog post. We had to cut it in half, 2- 35' wide, so we could tow it through the narrow Dry pass by El Capitan at the north end of POW. There was only 15' to spare from getting hung up on the rocks of the shoreline there. Jere towing through there at slack high tide, which was a must. and only a 15 minute window for that bottle neck. In all it was a 60 hr round the clock tow from Port Protection to Klawock inlet and the Viking Lumbers log sort yard. Many hours at 1.2 knots with Jeres tug boat.
