I mean, it's so ugly. It's got so many mistakes. It's taking up precious space in my shop. It's got a crack in the back from one end to the other, since it had no arch and has since dried out... And I want the tuners for another project.

Should I keep it, or use it to toast some marshmallows?

Keep it! You can recycle the tuners if you spent a pretty penny on them.

I keep my 1st one around because its a great reference point of where you were. In the future, it will be fun to look at and think "man, I've come a long way"

hey my first has got a crack on the back too LOL
and its pretty ugly too..

keep it, it´s your first guitar after all... OTOH, you could also recycle the wood.

Is a keeper...
Mine now be cracked, back, top and rib...one day me fix.
Since then me has made a gazzilion of them and well in me NSHO, its still the best one yet.
When you reach 90, well may then you can burn it, thats if they let you has matches.

There is only one first..........!!! Keep it. My first has gone long ago,actually gave it away,and not sure if it even exists now. Am sorry now that I did not keep it. A good point of reference to guage the journey traveled.

If you don't get rid of it you will never can say "why did I not keep it!"

If you want the tuners off of it, take them off. I think keeping your first is a good idea if you can't see anyone wanting it, or you absolutely loathe it. Hang it up in the shop.

I gave my first one to my Mom as a christmas present last year...she loved it!!!!

I have my 1st and it is always on the wall ready to play. It is way below my current standard for sound and building skill, but is a great player, it's set up how I like my guitars and plays great. I have had offers but it will always be mine.

I'm not the one to say what to do with your first guitar. I have kept mine and still play it regularly. It turned out real good and i like the way it sounds and plays. Yes, I have been asked to sell it, but won't because i have a use for it as i do play guitar and it's my first.

The first top I carved is going to become a shop wall clock. My first guitar had so many mistakes I stopped during the finishing process and plan on using it as a repair project because it was never playable. You should keep your first as a reminder or comparison of where you were when you started and where you are now or to use to work on repair techniques.

I say keep it. One day you will regret getting rid of it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life.

Or you are not the sentimental type ad you do not get attached to "things." If that is the case, do what you like. I for one, will never pat with my first. But then again, I built it for my first born and put an inscription inside of it for him. And, my grandfather passed away while I was building it and he and I used to talk about it all of the time.
You go ahead and toss your #1 if you wish. Mine will get a monument built to it! LOL

I guess I would be tempted to put cheaper tuners on it and make it a wall art or a put it on a stand in the corner in my house and leave it . ( then again i have several in decor situations now) I dont think I would get rid of it , as has been said , from the " where I was to where I am" perspective .

Do you really want it out there and to have people base their opinions of your work on it, ten, twenty or thirty years from now??
I see new makers selling their instruments prematurely all too often. Even well seasoned makers can have unforseen problems with an instrument and may find themselves in a bind with a client. It's almost a certainty with a first, second or third guitar.
Early guitars by any maker often have lots of problems that may preclude them ever being right enough to satisfy a finicky client.
Save yourself the headache, keep it or if you must get it out of your life, find a recipient (close friend or family not the general public) to give it to (or at least buy it for only the cost of materials and hardware) and save yourself a load of grief down the line.
Don't destroy it though, it can be a valuable window on the progress you have made some day.
A good friend of mine recently agreed to make one of his first clients a guitar in exchange for the one he sold him at the beginning of his career, even trade, just to get it out of circulation.
'Nuff said.
