RIP John Mickelson, the Fossil Ivory King, who passed away on July 30th of a heart attack. He will not be soon forgotten -John was a legend. Wild, driven, humorous, sincere and honest. He was an open book and never without a story to tell. I'll miss him showing up at all the lutherie shows -jet lagged as hell from his long trip from Alaska. He was a constant and unforgettable presence in our community -and he made a lot of friends. He will be missed.

Thanks for the Obit, it is sad to hear the news. You didn't mention survivors but my condolences go out to all his friends and family. If per chance you talk to his survivors be sure to mention us fellow guitar enthusiasts who appreciated his work.

I never had the pleasure of meeting him but from your description I wish I had. Condolences to family and friends.

This bites! John made many pins for me, and we spent what seemed like hours discussing pin angles, fit, head size and shape, and living in sub-arctic climates. He was a truly unique individual. He'll be missed...!

I am truly saddened by this news. I met John shortly after I began to build guitars and over the years purchased well over 100 sets of his wonderful pins. John would often send me boxes of ivory pins worth thousands of dollars completely on trust and allow me to choose the pins I liked and return the remainder.

Some of you may know that the past few years have brought some hardships to John including a bad leg injury and flooding of his shop and equipment. His artful Walrus Ivory pins and proprietary nut & saddle blanks were in a class by themselves and he very much deserved the title "Fossil Ivory King".
