Sanding an epoxy pore fill.....sometimes I wish I DID make acoustics.

Got a couple of things in the works. Did the final level sand on the finish for my challenge dred after I reworked the sound hole and neck. Also finished the slot head for my 12 fret size O.

Completed pre-scalloping and gluing all top braces. Now I'm sharpening chisels and spokeshaves for voicing the top and upcoming neck carving. I'd it just me, or do you find sharpening your tools therapeutic?

Trying to finish the OLF build-off #2. It's finally warming up in Wisconsin. I ran out of wood pellets, so my shop has been in the 40-50F degree range. Now finally its in the upper 50s. I got some finish on. Made from all local woods. Cedar top, Ash back and sides, maple neck and binding, and Birch Bark rosette and end graft. Hickory fretboard/headplate, and bridge.

poured the slab for my soon-to-be tiny dry room. 1300mm x 2000 mm. Will have a work bench each end and a go-bar deck as well on each end. Storage, etc.....Gotta have a cement block curb around all 4 sides, as we flood under the house.....

Also found a laminate trimmer for $90AU posted. Cheap as for down here. Gonna build a binding jig. Gives me lots of heartache.....

My Sinker Red Cedar 12 fret 00 is now complete, my student Bob was over working on his top and back bracing while I was installing the clear pick guard and final shaping the nut and when the strings went back on he did a test drive. The sound is a little noisy but this is the 1st actual tune played so I thought sharing would be cool.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

As promised, photo of my "new" spiral staircase so I can get up/down to my attic/mezzanine (whatever you want to call it) storage area easily:

Image

I still have to move the light over a bit, fill in the gaps in the railings (to bring it up to code) and add some railings at the top, then put in some storage racks/shelves so I can finally rid the workshop of all those dreaded flip-top plastic storage bins (you know, the ones with the sharp edges that cut your legs all the time!!)....

Cheers,
Dave F.

A little late posting but i just took the time to upload the pics. Made a Krenov style high angle smoother, mostly just to have an excuse to use the badsaw i recently bought. This is the first thing that popped in my head to make with it. The body is hard maple with zebra wood sole. The blade is bedded at 55deg. I was very surprised at how well this plane worked without any fettling with the bed or wedge. Getting .001" shavings right off the bat. Anyone looking for a top notch handplane but don't have the money for a Lie Nielsen should really consider making a krenov style plane.

Don't mind the pencil marks I didn't get rid of inside the mouth, was in a hurry making it. Also there is a missing bevel that has been fixed since. The mouth opening ended up really tight on this one. The shiny spot in the picture that makes the mouth look big is just where the blade has been honed.
