Never a bad thing to keep a healthy dose of reality in our daily thoughts. Thanks Todd, and thanks to all of the men and women who have served or are currently serving to protect our great country!

My grandfather died Jan. 2 2012.

He fought on the Chinese side (back before it was overrun by the communists) during World War II. He lost his family to Japanese bombers during the war so he was the sole survivor.

My family and I are remembering my nephew, George Libby, who was was killed in action in Afghanistan. He was 23.

Time has passed but we are still having difficulty coming to grips with this loss.

With the pictures of George, I am posting a photograph taken and a Memorial Day ceremony celebrating him and others. The people shown are George's father and grandmother.

Both sides of my family have a long history of military service, with relatives fighting in every war all the way back to the American Revolution--and further still, of course, if you travel back across the Atlantic. My father came home from WWII, but one of his brothers did not; other uncles and cousins have been killed in action during my lifetime. On my 18th birthday I spoke with my father about deferring college and signing up. He told me he'd seen and done enough for both of us and prayed that I'd never go to war. It's one of the few times I actually took his advice. On this day I offer thanks to my father, my uncles and cousins, and to all who have served. It's no small matter.

Thank you.

George

Thank you for the post and reminder, Todd.
And thank you to all who have served.
We have the blessing of our Dad still being with us, though he was a B-26 pilot in WW II!

Steve

Steve, my dad was a B-26 navigator in WW2. Wonder if they knew each other.
