The softness, low odor, easy cutting and the relatively light color all point to butternut, AKA white walnut.
Butternut is also more likely to have fluted growth rings than black walnut. The double point on the flat sawn (cathedral) grain (left side of the photo) is an indication of fluted growth rings.

Here's a Black Walnut blank from our lamination rack I photographed five minutes ago - looks mighty similar -- ya' think?

C'mon everybody, it is black walnut.. not butternut. no doubt, 100% black walnut. probably steamed. probably originated in Kentucky.

Sure looks the same to me. Thanks everyone for helping. I'm planning on buying some today when I visit Hibdon.

They didn't have black walnut so I'll try Owl Lumber when I get a chance. Did buy mahogany back and cherry neck. I love looking thru their stuff. Feels like Christmas.

I went to local hardwood lumber yard today and they said cherry, so I bought some to try. Still thinking black walnut but have to find a local source to try a piece and compare. I can use the cherry anyway but the mystery wood cuts sooooo easy. Thanks again to everyone for the help.
