Here is the latest Luthier Tips du Jour video. In this video I talk about and show how I do a Tru Oil finish on a neck. This video as well as all my other videos are available via my website, https://lutherieacademy.com/videos , or on YouTube. Don't forget to subscribe to the O'Brien Guitars YouTube channel if you want to get the latest Luthier Tips du Jour videos when they are released.

Nothing about wood prep. Years ago Addam Stark told me to basically polish the wood before application and I remember an article in the old LMI catalog saying the same.

I usually sand to 600G and even polish further with micro mesh. It’s a good finish for necks.

I tried over 20 years ago to get a deep translucent red with Transtint. I contacted TruOil and there was a limit to how much dye I could put in the TruOil so the best I could get that way was pink! I ended up putting the dye in shellac and spraying that on then finished with the TruOil.

Ken Parker finished his archtops with Tru-oil. The entire guitar, not just the neck. He first pore-filled with epoxy. You can watch him do it on his youtube channel

The mailbag question was about TruOil, NOT wood prep.

I like Rob, but he should NOT be using steel wool. Scotchbrite is the way to go.
