These Solera boards were made for Mike Elwell. His classical builds are quite respected.

The idea was to create something very stout and -extremely- accurate. The large Haas cnc was employed. Model in Solidworks. Tool path in Mastercam. The accuracy is .0003" on that machine.

You can see (I hope) that when he clamps anything to this there is no defection of any kind. He's pleased.

Probably quite a bit of deflection on his back when he picks them up, though :)

What kind of bit did you use for the dished areas? Square end, ball end, or is there such a thing as a mill with a large radius on the end?

I used a 1" ball with .01" stepover for each pass. One could build off of the freshly cut surface without needing to sand it.

They work boards are beautiful, like high-end kitchen cutting boards. For those without that equipment, but a router, it is not difficult to build a standard router jig that yields a surface that also does not require sanding. Below are pictures of the jig and the routing in-process, you can see how smooth the finish is, equal to the un-routed mdf surface.
