Hello everyone. I am a new member to the forum and I am excided about having such a resource available. I have not built any instruments at this time however, I am researching and planning to make an 18th century style guitar. For now i have another question that has come up among the pickers I hang around with.

Can someone tell me why guitars are marked on the ninth fret and banjos and
mandolins are marked on the tenth fret?

Yes and no

something to do with musical scales, the way they are tuned and blues runs or some sort of mumbo jumbo like that.

now just a few days back me read a clear and understandable reason for that over at

http://www.luthiercom.org

Me thinks it was by Dave White a British Luthier.

here be his web page

http://www.defaoiteguitars.com

now if it wasn't him, just log on to http://www.luthiercom.org and ask the question there.
