First one at this size.







For the veterans on this site, the neck is the same one I was told to scrap and start over. It took me almost a full year to actually finish the neck, and some of the repairs are visible if you know where to look. I must say, it would have been smarter to follow the advice and rebuild it from scratch. Next neck I will follow a process flow that should help me bypass some of the problems I had this time. On the positive side, it sounds and plays quite well to my (old) ears, and is obviously louder than my 000's. Hoping to get back to my 'normal' build speed of roughly one a year. Still looking to build one that doesn't need reworks. I almost made that on the body, not so much on the neck. Thanks for all the inputs along the way. Roy

What is the thick dark purfling?

How does she sound?

The purfling is just some 'fake' rosewood binding from LMI (forgot what they call it) that I cut down and bent for purfling. I had tried cherry, but could not get it bent without problems, so used this instead. Sounds great to my ears, but not sure I'm hearing enough high freq to be a reviewer of record. Gonna get my guitar teacher's opinion in a couple days, but she's always so positive I doubt she'll have a lot of criticism, except maybe the size being a bit larger than she's used to. Kinda disappointed in the way the fret markers turned out. I liked the red ones, but these are closer to brown, and don't show up unless the light reflects off them. I think I'm finally getting the finish I've been hoping for.

Very nice Roy congratulations. You hung in there with the neck too and likely learned some useful stuff.

We all make mistakes I certainly did and do but in time we get past them and in more time I rarely remember them especially at my age

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Yes, that sounds right; Sundari. Wish I knew another source for it.

Plans not my own at all, it's from a plan for a Grand Auditorium. I could dig them out and see the label/source if anyone is interested.

Thank you all for the encouragement, I must say that most of last spring into summer I was pretty depressed at my own stupidity over that neck, but I finally shook it off as I got into the finishing stage, and yes, I did repairs I never would have thought of before getting in a bind and letting stubbornness take over. Feeling pretty confident going into my next build based on help and advice from folks on this site.

Very nice, stunning in fact, congrats! I know what you mean about reworks.

I'm on my fourth. I've already made a mistake on it- re-routed the top purfling channel with a router, forgetting I had cut the end-wedge pocket. Of course, the router bit cut a nice, rounded profile, matching the end-wedge-pocket-depth into the top edge, 1/4"long each side of the center seam. I fixed it with a splice from my retained top cut off. Also had to add wood sliver to the end block which was in the cutter path.

Waiting for the one where I do not make a stupid mistake. CHit happens with tear out, chips and other wood-related failures but I hate the donkey dumb mistakes. Mistakes are the hardest part of learning- at least I won't make them again.

Oh, I wish saying that would make it be true! I've had a few mistakes that dog me from guitar to guitar for a while, despite promising myself I would do better next time.
