It's funny the things you come across when surfing the web.

Anyone know what guitar that is? Sounds pretty good for a late 1950's "movie"

I can't help with the guitar, but I believe that the footage is from Pete Seeger's mid-1960s series 'Rainbow Quest', which might help in further narrowing it down.

There are heaps of clips from the show on Youtube featuring some pretty legendary folks -- Rev Gary Davis, Elizabeth Cotten, Johnny Cash and many, many more. A truly amazing archive of oldtime folk and blues, especially considering the good quality of much of the footage.

That clip is from the mid sixties and I think that may be the guitar someone built for him- a student or something. I've always loved that clip.

This, and a lot of other great video is on Stefan Grossman's "Legends of Country Blues" series which he sells at guitarvideos.com. Don't miss Big Bill Broonzy

He does some flat picking on "How You Want it Done" which Stefan hasn't posted, but is worth getting the disc for.

Your'e right the clip is from Pete Seegers show "Rainbow Quest". I have the entire show on DVD, great stuff!

I always wondered about the brand of that guitar, It sounds great.

I'm sure Stefan Grossman knows what brand guitar it is. He spent a lot of time with MJH
during his brief rediscovery years.

You can learn that song on youtube, taught by John Miller, note for note. Not difficult, but a little tricky.

In later years when he did some touring, he was furnished with a Guild. Looking at the pearl at the 12th or 14th frets, that pictured guitar was a special to at least some degree. Before he was "discovered" he played Stellas. He was an early influence on my fingerpickin'.mt "Glory, glory, hallelujah When I lay my boiden down."

I found this

"One of the last guitars Hurt owned was an unnamed, custom-built, auditorium-style flattop with inlaid wood binding and Hurt's name inscribed in a block marker at the 12th fret. This is the guitar he plays on Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest TV show, and it's also seen in photographs of Hurt picking on the front porch of his Grenada, Mississippi house."

This is indeed a hand built guitar for Mississippi John - I forget who made it. John used Stefan's vintage OM-45 for his Vanguard studio recordings - which sound awesome. He later switched to a Guild (Stefan tells the story of how/why he picked the Guild in a couple of his books) which he played on the live vanguard album (which doesnt sound nearly as good IMO).
