Just strung this spruce/Nomex/cedar double top with cocobolo back/sides, ebony bindings and French polished shellac finish. In its first two hours of life, the notes are characteristically even with a very large dynamic range.

I just strung up a baritone prototype, tuned C-C or B-B. 27,5'' scale.

Top is sitka, back and sides Wenge. Just sprayed a light coat of schellac for protection.

I really like that rosette. A toot on linings would be most welcome.

Thanks.

In addition to replacing the rosette on #2, I also have chiseled out the "Offending Rosette" on #3.
Sloppy fitting, and gaps in the outside ring, which was added to hide a chip-out in the top.

Removing the sloppy job.

Just a little clean up left to do.

I also cut and planed out some back brace blanks from a, nicely quartered, Spanish Cedar neck blank. These are alll about 7.6 - 8 mm thick, and will need to be worked a bit more before shaping, but I'll wait, and do them one at a time for fit..

And as an impetus to make Hesh go clean his shop!

Dang, everyone has some great stuff going on. I just finished up both of these projects, neither of which has anything to do with guitarbuilding. The bookcase has a nice tap tone though. Cherry and Douglas Fir. Wifey and I just bought our first home, and needed a place to put the books. The li'l box is a stationary box for my mother.

While my guitar building sings her Lorelei song, beckoning to the rocks, I have this going on. It's a 100 year old Chestnut canoe. I've stripped out the old varnish which as brown like EIR, sanded it and revarnished. Also repaired about 20 broken ribs and other wood work.

I'm making some progress on my Telecaster, working on some necks now...well, 9 of them. How did that happen? I was only supposed to build one!

Attatched a small oscillator on my latest guitar. It's extracted from a malfunctioned mobile phone.

I finished a guitar with Friederich design about ten days ago. The basses are strong, clear, resonant, deep, and very even. And the trebles are fine, although a bit cold and tight. She suites Bach's pieces more than slow ballads. I think a more rigid bracing system like this would take more playing to open up, hence I've had her vibrated. I know it's silly and not necessarily, but many people here believe local luthiers can't make good guitars. They tend to pay more attention to what's not good.

This oscillator runs ok at 3v and is more gentle than a vibrator... laughing6-hehe

I couldn't find the dancing icon that really captured my feelings on a guitar and a vibrator but I bet someone is going to come up with something really funny for this.

This guy walks into a bar............

OK, maybe it's not too far fetched. If only you could come up with something to speed up it ageing. That would be impressive. :)

yeah, +1 on the vibrator thingy!!

my shop?

3 wide necked (40mm nut) mandos under way. 2 A's and a mini dread.

the headstock is a bit long on the dread one, but I'm REALLY pleased with the shape of the bound headstock on t'other one.....

Image

Here's the mini dread so far.....

it'll have a pinned bridge with two strings to a pin......

I've been working on my 2nd guitar. My "fish" guitar. I'm an avid fisherman and fish taxidermist, so after a year of making my 1st guitar and dreaming of the next project, I thought why not a fish shaped sound-hole. Bluegills to be exact. After having a 2nd child this last summer, I finally have time to complete this vision. So this is where I am now. I'm basically done with the top plate and neck. Just the final sanding/cleanup. The back plate is almost ready for bracing, and the sides are going to be bent soon if I can get them to bend. Top is sitka spruce, back and sides granadillo. Neck is mahogany with granadillo face plate. Fretboard is pao ferro. Bridge is rosewood. The top was very stripey so made everything else kinda stripey. I'm thinking about using the chinease tourquise dots on the fretboard. I have bloodwood/basswood lam binding and w/b/w purfling. I'm doing a 1 piece neck because of the soundholes and i'm not great at dovetaling yet. I'm just wondering how i'm going to glue the bridge..Maybe glue it before the back goes on. Thanks for looking. Jason

I have a bro in law that lives in Fairview, south of Enid. Went out to visit him and immediately noticed one thing. All the trees point north because of the constant wind! gaah Neat place, though.

Not related to guitarbuilding, but I've got my camper in my shop, doing a total refurb from the waist up. What a pain that is! Did you know that a new door for a camper costs $500, and aluminum siding is almost $6 a square foot?!?!?!!!!! Luckily I found a used door.

Myself, along with quite a few others, were laid off last week. So in the epic words of Whitesnake "Here I go again on my own."

Holy cow, John. I was afraid it was something like that. I'm worried about my spot here too.

Best of luck. We're all pulling for you.

I made me a new neck mortise/tenon jig last week, using the Stewmac templates. Took advantage of a couple warm(er) days to do so. Otherwise, been much too cold for the shop.
On another note, the wife decided that I could turn the third bedroom into a inside shop if I so wanted. Gotta love her. Now I got to figure out where to put the stuff that's in there now, and begin the process of moving my shop into this 10x10 room. I'm gettin' kinda excited about the idea!
