First I should memntion that I am a novice builder, made a few electrics, but cheated and bought the neck, so really I made a body's and hooked up some good pickups laughing6-hehe

I want to try something more tricky. I want to make an acoustic with fibreglass back and sides. I see Ovation has has some sucess with this type of guitar. But the guitar I want to replicate is the Fender Squier Telecoustic Acoustic/Electric. They dont make it any more which brings me to my first of what Im sure will be many questions.

Was the sound so bad on the Fender model that discontinuing was the only option or was it the fact the sales just weren't there?

Thanks

after re-reading my post (and finding no edit button to elaberate on it) I decided that I should make what Im after more clear.

Because I like the look and feel of the Fender model, if there were any problems with that particular model than I would like to discover them and correct/improve them in my build.

DW, I can't answer your question about the Fender, but as for the edit button, you have either 5 or 10 minutes after your post to make edits. After that, it's carved in stone. The forum went this route after a couple of thread blew up and comments were changed after the fact.

The Fender model you are referencing was more of a niche instrument in my opinion. It didn't sound very much like an acoustic, but I think the novelty of having a model with the same body shape as the electric model was enough to make some sales. Don't get me wrong--they were cool models but nothing that anyone would sit and play and say "man, THAT has a nice sound". The body was too thin and my guess is that the tops were not braced like a traditional acoustic. The top just couldn't move enough to get a full sound...

So... I guess you could try to make it a deeper body and experiment with some bracing to get the top moving. Have fun!

Thanks for the posts. Alot of GREAT information.

As stated in my earlier posts I really should read my posts over better for clarity before posting. When I said I was a novice builder I meant of guitars. As far as working with wood, I've been crafting wood (furniture of all kinds, merry-go-round full size horses and much more) since I was six years old (now the better side of 40). So in general wood building terms Im no novice.

The reason I want the firbreglass back on a electric look guitar is not because I think its an easier build, as Todd pointed out its not by any means. Nor am I trying to re-invent the wheel. I like the look and the feel of a light weight, thin accoustic that has the "option" of plug in (tho it most likely never will be). And I am aware of all wood thin acoustics.

The point/decision for this build is two fold.....the guitar look and feel and more importantly the challange of building what I would think, would be beyond the skills of a novice and still making it sound half decent. I don't expect that under the best conditions I'm going to come out with a concert quality sound, but thats not what Im after.
