Has anybody tried J.E. Moser’s transparent water based grain filler? Or know who makes it?
Or the filler used in the Bogdonovitch book?

Stew-Mac sells a clear water base filler.
Maybe it's the same one.
I use it & like it.
BUT seal with shellac first.

because of the water on the wood? or some other reason?
how did you arrive at it? Sorry for the grilling, I need to chose a plan very soon.

Hey Mike

Have you been using this product for long? I was wondering about shrinkage. It also says on the Stew-Mac site that it dries pretty quickly (a couple of hours). Is that so? How hard does it get?

Any additional info on this product would be appreciated.

Cheers

Pat

I use the shellac so the water in the filler will not raise the grain .
Shellac does but not as much.

It does shrink so i usually use 2 coats on deep pore woods.
It does dry hard in a few hours if you apply thin coats.
It will fill any low spot or small hole if you need to.

I like it because it leaves the wood looking natural.

I sand back to the wood then apply another coat of shellac-then waterbase finish over that.

I like the look of really smalll pores in a finish-i can't stand the dipped in plastic look.

Filler used in the Bogdanovic book was Enduro War-R-Base. There's a picture in the finishing section.
That was bothering me, I've read the book several times [headinwall] had to look again.
Google come up with suppliers at http://www.compliantspraysystems.com

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.
