I'm sure I've seen a tutorial on making herringbone purfling, but I don't seem to be able to find it. I'm in need of some for some 1890's vintage style guitars that is somewhere between the two sizes that are currently available at most suppliers. Does anyone know where I can find either the purfling or a tutorial so I can make it. TIA.

I can't see anything in those links on how to do it.

For what it's worth, I did a tutorial on making wheat (same process as making herringbone, except without the center strip) over on Luthier Community. I did two batches. The first, I did not like, as it was breaking up too much when cutting the small strips. Poor gluing is what I attribute that to. The second batch on the second page of the thread, came out much better. The whole point is, don't try to glue too much at once. Glue maybe four to 6 layers at a time, then clamp and let dry, really dry. Overnight is best, but several hours will work. Then come back and glue another set, clamp and let dry. When you glue too many layers at once, too much glue dries before the clamps are on, and the curling veneer, will create it's own gaps in the layers. They are small, but they'll cause strips to break at joins. I got my methods from the Bogdanovich book. I'll be glad to answer any questions I can. Either here or over there. HERE IS THE LINK

Bill, im having trouble seeing those links you posted, does anyone else know of another source on how to construct the meander patter used by Torres, Romanillos and the like

David La Plante had an article in Guitarmaker a few issues back that was pretty good. Not high in detail, but if you know the basics, that's all you need. It ain't rocket science.
