Hi all.

Just to let you know I've received my sample kit of Ecopoxy and I'm currently testing it out on some sraps. I'm not ready to call it a victory until the scraps are fully finished, but up to now, it looks promissing. Plenny of work time and cures real hard.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Seems great! I never heard about this before. Did you find some in Montreal or had to order?

Francis

I had to order it. (Be prepared canadians; UPS will charge you 17$ of custom broker fee on the 20$ sample kit!!!)

I heard about it here in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=26924&hilit=ecopoxy

I sent some samples both the clear and amber to Todd to test but I don't think he has tested them out yet. I figured he has enough experiance with expoxies to do a good review on it.

This stuff still makes me a bit wary. There are a lot of asterisks on their site. Epoxies are generally safe; it's the hardeners that aren't. Their hardener's MSDS mentions that there's phenol in it. Check out the MSDS for phenol and tell me how non-toxic it is:

Quote:
"This material is a systemic poison and constitutes a serious health hazard. The risks of using it in the laboratory must be fully assessed before work begins. Vesicant. Typical MEL 2 ppm; typical OEL 1 ppm. Acute poisoning by ingestion, inhalation or skin contact may lead to death. Phenol is readily absorbed through the skin. Highly toxic by inhalation. Corrosive - causes burns. Severe irritant."

The asterisks all refer to the same note, mentioning that people allergic to nuts should not handle the product when it's still in a liquid state.

Indeed phenol is bad, but they must be using it in a really small amount since they don't even suggest to use a respirator mask when working the epoxy.

As for the epoxy glue property, my tests won't help on this as I only intend to use it as pore filling for now. But testing it for as a glue would be a good thing, of course.

This guy has been testing it as a glue and it's a pretty interesting web site for some hand made tools too.

For what it's worth.....when one sees crystals in their "part A"....as this guy mentioned....it's because the material was stored at a low temperature. The solution is not to stir these crystals into the mix but to raise the temperature of the part A until the crystals disappear.

If you just mix the crystals you'll likely get tiny areas of uncured, or partially cured epoxy.

Dennis Leahy did a post on this stuff over at LuthierCom. Here is a link. He was somewhat disappointed in the color, which, in his opinion was more canary yellow than amber. He tried a number of different mix ratios, and posted some notes.

When I first read about this "100% non-toxic" epoxy (a quote from another forum), I ordered the sample kit. When I opened the hardener jar, I was surprised that it smelled just like regular epoxy hardener. I thought this was suspicious, so I checked the MSDS, and found that it does indeed contain some of the same hazardous chemicals that are in other standard epoxies. The overall health hazard rating for Ecopoxy hardener is 2, which is a bit safer than West, but the same rating given to System Three T-88. The rating for Ecopoxy resin is 1, which is safer than Both West and System Three, and is pretty good, with a "slight" risk.

Bottom line is that this product is commendably one step safer, but not nearly safe enough to be considered non-toxic. Proper safety gear would still be in order.

Hi guys.

Just want to let you know that my tests are done and all I can say is that Ecopoxy turned out just as great as any epoxy I tried for pore filling. As for the 'safer' aspect of Ecopoxy, I can't add anything else that has already been mentioned in this thead. That said, even though it does not appear to be 100% safe, it seems to me sufficiently safer to go with it rather than with less safe epoxy. My 2 cents...

Alain, what makes you feel as though it is less safe? I do remember this thread and reading about the stuff at their website. Too many astericks as I recall...

I don't feel it is less safe, on the contrary. I think the other brands of epoxies are less safe. I just think that Ecopoxy, as safe as it may be, should not be considered 100% non-toxic. Nonetheless, I'm going with it.

You're welcome Fillipo!

I didn't thin the epoxy. It's actually pretty liquid on its own.

Looking at the MSDS, it appears to be just another epoxy, but with a different sales pitch.

Not really. Read Brook Moore's post, it clearly explains where and how it is safer than "West System" and "System Three". Maybe not by much, but safer nonetheless.

Well, whatever it is, treat it like toxic epoxy. Wear gloves, protective clothing, and respiration gear. Let someone else be their test mule! Until I see the manufacturer putting it on a hot dog and eating the hot dog, I will consider it epoxy as usual.

Alain, never buy from anyone who only uses UPS to Canada. If they won't ship USPS or Fed Ex, find another source.
