I ate cake. Pineapple upside down cake that is. It was my birthday after all. 32 years young... strange to think I've spent almost half my life building guitars. Well here's to another 32 years of learning this craft.

Happy birthday John! Mmm, pineapple upside down cake. Haven't had that in a while. And why stop at another 32 years, how about 64 :) Ever heard of fiddle maker Violet Hinsley?

And Paul, that ain't too many strings. A fine looking harp it is, and nice job on the repair. One of these days I'm going to have to build one of those things.

Happy birthday John .

I spent most of my time preparing and managed to get some initial coats of nitro on to #4 bliss

Just a few hours on Sunday - part of it cleaning, part carving on the top of my first mandolin. Also worked a little on a set of necks for various projects (from the top - 5 string bass, 12-str acoustic, 6-str acoustic, J-bass, and the mandolin).

Filippo, do you have a squared up shot of your topography? I'd love to see how you transition the lower bout to the waist. Maybe I should start doing something on my Les Paul.

Letting it go would be a very good thing IMO.

You seem like a pretty smart guy Todd with a lot to offer. I hope this is the last of it as do many others.

Getting the last word in can be self gratifying, believe me I know being as weak as the next human. I have however learned that some things will never die and most often get out of control once perpetuated. You've provided a lot of very good input to this forum and continuing to do that and taking the high road is certainly what I would believe all to desire.

The high road is the way to go, take it some from us...being on the outside looking in - value our opinion now as we value yours, when it is in regards to all things related to luthiery.

I would offer that the thread you allude to would have contained significant opinions on both sides. It's a testament to the mods that it's gone.

Ah, if we could only catch a break from Todd's "moral authority". :D

Todd - accepted -
by the way - my moral authority does not extend over anyone, only to my dog, which sometimes I also doubt that he even pays attention.

Celebrated my son's 20th birthday.

Spent a few days at the camp that my kids attend, did some canoe repair while there, visited, saw my girls briefly-they were busy doing camp things...

Took some "launching" photos of the canoe that I've been including progress photos of in these threads. That's the new owner trying a cross post maneuver. Thanks for the indulgence.

Watched a couple of movies on my son's home cinema, "le Cinema au Cave" (the cinema in the basement). Impressive, he's done a good job: big, big screen and the DIY speakers are awesome!

Got some carving done on the viola da gamba scroll, completed the rim, and got it off of the mold. I've been cutting out the background, its going to be a LOT of work carving this! I'm about half way done now, or about most of what you can see in the photo, just the background, mind you. Can't work on it too long a time, it makes your eyes go bonkers if you do.

Those are some awesome dreads there  And the canoe looks great too.

Nice to see an update on the viola da gamba as well :) That carving does look rather difficult. It would be pain enough in soft wood, but in maple, beware the carpal tunnel [xx(] Sharpen often!

My task this morning was touching up the rough side bending. Actually I was going to do it yesterday, but I do it outside for slightly less danger of burning the house down, and I started to roast in the sun after a while. So I got out there nice and early today, and fiddled away for a couple hours getting all the twists out and curves smoothed and matching the pattern. It was trickier than I'd expected. Maybe I should try harder to get it just right on the first pass next time.

Now I just need to trim the brace ends on the top, glue on the blocks and sides, finish voicing, brace the back, and finally I can close this baby up bliss

Doug, you do such nice work. I wish I were closer to you, I gave a hand made wood canoe to my Dad some years back for his use in Kentucky where he lives near Kentucky Lake. Well, a storm picked it up last year and tried to wrap it around a tree, with the result being several broken ribs (to the canoe). So sad.

Is there anyone you know and might be able to recommend in KY to have a look at her?

Thanks, Steve,

Check out the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association. Specifically, go to the Builders and Supplies page here: http://wcha.org/buildsupply/

You should be able to find somebody close enough.

Good luck.

Beautiful canoe Douglas and a great shot!
I love solo canoes.

And some pretty fine instrument work going on there also! [clap]
