I have quite a bit of osage orange stashed away, but I don't really want to expend the effort to make a for-sale guitar out of it if there's no buyers.

What's your experiences?

Don't know about the market, but I always wanted to make a solidbody from osage orange.
Never found any locally (it's everywhere here in Kansas).

Hey Phillip, Tim McKnight has made a few Osage guitars and he seems to be able to sell them easy enough. Maybe shoot him an e-mail. And by the way, the bits for your "brown" guitar are on the way! FINALLY!

I've done 2 Osage Orange guitars, and I'm working on another now. (all comissions). I love it. It sounds good, and it's easy to work with.

There is absolutly no market for osage orange guitars so you should just send me your entire stock so you wont be tempted to build with the stuff.

Thanks for the input everybody. I guess I'll go ahead and do it. I'm thinking blue pau zipflex purfling, desert ironwood bridge, fingerboard and bindings. Seems like the colors would go well together. What kind of color schemes do those of you who've used osage go with? Feel free to post pictures. :)

I've not made guitars out of it but have used it for other projects. If left exposed to UV it gets a nice medium brown color. So it depends on what color you want, orange/yellow, better finish fast with a UV blocking lacquer/varnish, light chocolate brown, put it in your UV box for a few before finishing.

Tone wise, it has a nice tap tone so I think it'll make a fine sounding guitar. I look forward to seeing it when you finish.

osage orange is a great wood for making long bows or self bows. If anyone has bigger lumber, 2"X2" by 6-7 foot, slices, mostly flatsawn close to the edge of the bark is the best, The flattest lines the better. I'm looking for a good dozen sticks myself. I live in wiscosin, so shipping is what it is. I know that alot of friends of mine would love to have a osage orange guitar that I made. If I could get a deal on it, it would be very good value. Its nice wood. Use it.

UV doesn't darken it, it oxidizes. Using a UV blocking finish wouldn't stop the color change.

Go for it Phillip.
The last commission I delivered was Osage Orange. Great guitar, Happy customer. He furnished the wood. Behlen Rock Hard Varnish gives it a nice finish and tones down the yellow. It looked nice with pauo fero binding and ebony bridge and fingerboard and head plate.

Thanks guys. I've actually already made three guitars out of it, but not for sale. The first one was my first guitar, the second one I'm going to destroy soon (it sounded good, but when I located the bridge, I didn't compensate it) the third one I gave away. You can see pics of at least two of them by searching my posts.

When I do list them for sale, what would be a reasonable price?

It has faded a little bit since these pics were taken, but not much. It is still an orangy honey color, if that makes nay sense at all.

Someone told me (Tim McKnight??) That Osage Orange doesn't take stain well. I haven't tried to stain any.

YES THERE IS A MARKET!
Osage rings up there with BR! A Bright Yellow Osage with a black top will sell in Pittsburgh! Been telling Tim that for years, he won't listen. A Steeler Player or a fan will snag it.
As the color browns the Steeler fan still has a wonderful guitar! :)

Don't destroy your second guitar. Re-locate the bridge. Yeah, I know, holes drilled in the top and all that. But, seriously, re-locate the bridge. You'll probably need to replace the bridge plate, but what the heck? Just fix it. Don't destroy it.

I've tried different stains, and was never happy with the result. I'd still like to try ebonizing it though.


Wouldn't re-locating the bridge mean refinishing the top? And wouldn't replacing the bridge plate be a real pain?

The bridge isn't the only problem. There's a crack in the top. The back is concave. There's no rosette. It's over braced. I suppose I could look at it like a good way to learn how to repair guitars.... :)

Is there a graceful way to install a rosette in a finished top?

Or keep a natural top and put in some green purflings to go with that gold back and sides. Then you'll have a winning guitar! :lol:
