...and built a downdraft table. I thought I'd share some pictures.

I've already had a system in place for my knifemaking tools, but I finally got tired of having piles of wood chips sitting around, catching on fire whenever I do some forge welding. [headinwall] :D

I got a Grizzly 1 HP unit this time.

First, a few pics of the table being built. It's just a simple box that hooks up to the vacuum line.

Now the air system itself. The exhaust from most of the tools goes straight outside. But the planer makes a lot of chips, so I have that going through a cyclone separator first.

Hi Phillip- Did you put any supports under the pegboard, or does it just sit on the cleats around the inside of the box?
Alex

Hi Alex,

I used a brace across the middle to support the perf board, then a vertical brace going from that one to the bottom. I'll take a picture of the inside for you.

Yup, that's it exactly. It's foam mesh of some sort. I'm using it to protect the guitar from scratches while working. The non-slip property is actually pretty irritating...

I have seen plan somewhere of a sanding table which is very similar to this. The only difference is that it has two boards set at an angle inside the box which directs falling dust down to a gully where it is sucked in by the extractor.

I think Grizzly do downdraft table inserts with rubber grommets around the holes, I thoughy they were two small to be practical for guitar size work.

I will be making something similar myself soon, thanks for the tip on the mat. I wonder if there is an alternative material that would do the same job?

Hi John- You could use a router pad, or an open mesh drawer liner from any store that sells kitchen ware. I've used the drawer liners for sanding/router pads. They aren't really sticky, and if you get them from a dollar store, they are inexpensive. They also come in lots of nice colours!
