Finished some bridges on the CNC for Gary Cote, with a stack of 25 more ebony blanks awaiting machining for another customer. Nice to have power back finally after Irene blew through.

I finally set up a photo area in my basement den. Got some photoflood lights off ebay, made some diffuser panels, and I'm experimenting with light angles and such. Here's my first try: This is my cocobolo six string, recently finished and buffed. (pardon the bedsheet - haven't got a photo backdrop yet...)

That one is a stunner, Pat!
And I've used bed sheets myself for photo work - they are made for the job.

Really REALLY nice guitar Pat! Hell, it would have looked good with dirty dish towels in the background!

Now, you say that jokingly, but I think that would actually look really cool.

I'm a'workin on a uke mould. Another new mould design that should turn out quite nicely. Should be done this afton, so I'll see about getting a pic of it for ye's.

Bent some of the required African Blkwood binding strips for harp 2, after thinning them on my new General Int'l 24" sander .. real treat .. gotta love a power drive, no more sled pushing !!! Also put the neck on the latest baritone, bridge on and done later this week.

Cleaned the shop so I am ready for the fall's new crop of students ...

I completed my Troji last evening and tested it out on the final side sanding of the Fanfret body, my only comment is why didn't I build this a long time ago.

Here are some pictures of the Fanfret, Z-poxy pore filler will start today

I think I am finsihed with the FP. I may do one more spirting off on all of the surfaces if it looks like it needs it tomorrow. Sometimes as the shellac cures the oils I used float to the surface. I used very little oil. This was done using ubeaut hard shellac.

I had the whole day set aside to work on building my drum sander. That's rare, with my four jobs and eight-month-old daughter. I even went to bed early last night to make sure I had a full day to work. My wife got up first, and as soon as I woke up she gave me two pieces of news. First, the bladder infection she's been dealing with had gotten worse and she needed to go to urgent care. I totally understand, and felt awful for her, but that did mean I was watching the baby. Second, my sister and nephew were moving out of my brother-in-law's house. They're getting a divorce.

Well, I have no right to whine. My day was peaches compared to theirs.

By the end of the day, I did manage to cut a whole bunch of little circles, got to spend some time with my nephew and sister, and got to lay on the couch and watch a documentary on Cream with my wife, who is now doing much better. All in all, it's not what I hoped to be doing today, but from a long term perspective, I know I did what was most important, and it could have been much worse. Still, bummer.

Well, yesterday I was rounding over the bindings before doing final sanding. Unfortunately, I got a little overenthusiastic and rounded my way right through the purfling. Just a tiny sliver of glue line showing, but over a pretty long run before I realized what it was. To make things worse, it's around the area where your arm reaches over (hence the sand through, making the corner nice and soft on the arm), and thus quite visible while playing since it reached to the waist.

So I weighed my options and my laziness, and came up with a plan. The purfling is black/maple/black/maple/black. Only the outermost black got sanded through, so I chiseled off just the binding, and cut the channel a tad deeper to completely remove that purfling line. Then cut a strip of fiber as tall as the binding, bent a new binding strip, and glued it up. The glue is now dry, but I'm also sleepy. I'll round over the new binding in the morning and find out if I got away with avoiding recutting the purfling ledge too, or if I'll just sand through again since there's very little tolerance for error as it is.

I just jointed a sitka top and layed out the rosette for a re-top project I just started. Tomorrow I'll finish the top and cut it to fit, and hopefully get the old top routed off...

Indeed, I would love to see what you came up with Fred. I have a simple one I built a while back, but would like to see what others have done...

Never ceases to amaze me, the quality of the work you all do. I'm getting close to finishing this Flamenco guitar. It will be my first French Polish attempt.

Here's the mould I did. I wasn't able to do it yesterday like I thought because a storm came through, so I was either marooned out in the shop or in the house. I chose the latter. I was able to complete it today but wasn't able to incorporate some of the new things I wanted to. The middle bit was going to be made out of little bits of wood from offcuts that were made from cutting out the other two bits. That was going to save me some wood. It took so long to get those buggers to fit and it started to look so sloppy I just gave up and went conventional. The other thing I was going to do was make the lil slot at the end like I usually do to add compression to make the sides fit tighter, giving me some cleaner glue joints. It still needs a bit of sanding, but I'm liking the result anyway. It's for a uke.

Here is the Troji, built in the style of the plans Rod True published

I got a coat of Z-poxy on the Quilted African Mahogany back and sides of the Fan Fret Jumbo so included a couple pictures of it. The epoxy really brought out the character of the wood.

Just playing with the new camera. If I get any more detail with this thing I won't ever sell any guitars. :)
