Have anyone heard of this luthier?

http://www.waltnerguitars.com/

I plan on visiting her shop shortly, will take my number 2 with me to show her...

She's a strictly traditional luthier, only deals in classical guitars, and FP only. I'd like to watch her french polish a guitar sometimes so I can get a feel of how this process works...

keeping my fingers crossed...

Hello, I studied together with Angela at the University of Zwickau for applied arts guitarmaking.
Worked about 2 or 3 years together with her in the same room, workbench to workbench.

She is friendly, a real master, and she is really good.

Tell her some greetings from Alex when you meet her!

Regards, Alex

That's a relief. I was really afraid that she'd think that I don't measure up to her experience/skill and stuff and say stuff like "You're not a luthier because you didn't get apprenticeship/degree/etc."

I didn't even know you could get a luthier degree in Germany... I was thinking it was mostly in the USA. What chances do you think I have of getting accepted into such a program? I was thinking of coming to Germany to study Chemistry because I didn't think they had a luthiery degree, but I was running into constant difficulties with the government...

I came across Angela Waltner's website a few months ago and was quite impressed..
obviously a clear and intelligent mind at work. Her bridge design and peghead
are notable- quite a beautifully simple rosette on one of her shown guitars.

I just got back from visiting the Waltners. I am quite impressed with her work, and I was kinda encouraged at the same time because I thought I needed to get a bunch of big tools, she only had a few benchtop tools and a small proxxon table saw to cut the spanish heel. I think what I really need are jigs like radius dishes without spending 200 dollars on shipping...

You can make a radius dish with a router and a long compass - no need to spend $$$$ on postage. See http://gicl.cs.drexel.edu/people/sevy/luthierie/workboards/Arched_Workboards.html and other posts in archives

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I'll do that once I get a shop going... rather not make it but if no one sells it.... money is tight enough and I have to buy enough wood to make about 4 guitars (because they need time to acclimate to the shop environment). Right now I will buy some soundboards in Germany, as it's hard to find good soundboards in Taiwan and I can buy the back/sides from suppliers in Taiwan...
