I inlayed side position dots on both sides of the neck, just in case someone wants to change it over to a lefty in the future. I got a real good chuckle when I realized what I had done.

All I've done so far is put a side in the bender flipped tail to heel. A little straightening out on the electric hot pipe, and back in the Fox bender it goes. All is well. I really have to shoot for a more unfixable mistake.

I inverted my black and white purflings between the Ebony binding and the Koa back and sides.
I realize after I glued one half of the back bindings... Luckily, it was HHG, so I just put a bit of warm water and everything came out cleanly.

Well, I try to keep my mistakes to a minimum (ha!) but this month I did a doozy. I was spraying a ukulele, and dropped it on the (concrete) floor from about 4 feet up. It landed on one corner. The binding was hardly scratched, but a section of the back popped up. I was able to press it back in place and flood the crack with CA, and it doesn't look too bad.

What was really disgusting though, was that I had installed a Virzi plate in this instrument, to see how it would sound, and it broke off. [headinwall] Being a uke, there wasn't enough room to work inside to re-install it, so I had to pull it out...

I can't help but notice the high number of views the tiny sandra bullock picture has. I am concerned that this sort of enticemnet is going to cause me to subconciously outdoofus everyone...I am a weak man. I did ruin a very fine piece of cocobolo last nite, even before seeing this.

I decided to save myself some time (famous last words, right?) and use the stewmac string spacing rule to space out my bridge pin holes. I did a mockup on scrap wood because i know the spacing isnt distributed perfectly. I thought it might turn out ok and after seeing the mockup I felt the un-even spacing wasn't noticeable. I did all my measurements on the bridge (already shaped and sanded) and drilled my holes. About 2 seconds later i realized the spacing was wider at the treble side and thinner on the bass side. I didn't look at the ruler saying <---Bass Treble---> gaah I sat at my table for a good 10 minutes hoping to wake up from a nightmare.

I would have made a completely new bridge if i hadn't drilled the soundboard along WITH the bridge. And since this guitar is for a fundraising auction, there ain't no way I'm retopping it.

I convinced myself that no one will notice.

I measured fretboard width from the blank's side not the centreline. I ended up with frets that were 90° to the blank's side. oops_sign
Obviously I found out about this after cutting the fretboard to width, [headinwall]

Didn't feel like making slanted nut, ended up throwing the fretboard away and making a new one.

I'm just not that much of a Sandra Bullock fan to reveal any mistakes I may or may not have made during the past month or current month. Besides, I haven't made any, nor has it been alleged that I may have made any mistakes.

Ah, there's a trick for that one. When filing the string relief notches so the pins can get fully seated (and increase the break angle over the saddle a bit), you don't have to file them precisely at the center of the hole. Put the outer two wherever you want for the spacing relative to the edges of the fingerboard, and then the rest of them fanning out to shimmy the spacing how you want it. My low E string hole ended up a little closer to its neighbor than the spacing between the rest, so I angled its relief notch out a bit, and the A and D in a bit, and now they're all pretty even.

As for my own doofusery, probably funniest is the ongoing battle between me and a cocobolo back. It's not quite as annoying as bubinga, but still tough to plane, and I've separated the centerseam twice now. And the first time, cracked some of the wavy grain along with it. Also blistered my thumb scraping it, but I gots me a scraper holder from Lee Valley now, so that won't be happening again. And no more blackened fingers either bliss (my sweat reacts with steel, and the generated blackness rubs off and makes a mess of light colored woods)

So I put those beautiful Pua snowflakes from Andy Depaule in a nice ebony board for my latest project I've been working on since...around May I think. Came out great. Tapered it and was getting ready to glue binding on it when I thought something looked funny. Marker at frets 3, 5, 7 ,9....11....14 Uh Oh!! [headinwall]

gaah MAKE IT STOP ! MAKE IT STOP ! That's NOT the tub o' lard I was referring to. Since I haven't touched my current build for months I'll have to relate a good one from my last outing. After bending the sides I was trimming them to exact length. I cut the first one short on the neck end. Being the cheap bastard that I am, I cut the other side longer and mounted the neck, so the centerline of the guitar was....well...off center by about a 1/4". I think it makes it easier to play laughing6-hehe

All of a sudden.......Sandra Bullock is looking a lot better to me.

Shame on you Wud!

Any reason Doofus will open,
But SANDRA BULLOCK's pic WON'T!!
Methinks think I smell censorship, which may be more appropriately applied to WudWerkr's last post!

_________________
The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

[headinwall] ........ the tip didnt go through the top , but I have a nice dent that has a 4 pronged look . [headinwall]

Wow!
Lotta screwing up around here this month!
I thought I would be in the running because as I was on f.p. coat # 18,
my fingernail put a 2" scratch in the top.
What's the best fix for that anyone?
I'm thinkin' 600 grit till it's gone,
then re-polish that section for 18 coats.
I like Sandra,
and no, I didn't click on da pic.
Hey Bruno,
my 3rd acoustic was the most problematic for me!!!!!!!!!!!
It's done, and I like it.
Binding issues, had to remove the back and carve braces more,
had to a a purf on the back because the back didn't go on right...
laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe
